Surprise Date Night: Rihanna’s Concert in Chicago

We were driving to the city for our date night and I had no idea where we were going. Hubby knows how much I love surprises, so many date nights are like this.

Though I knew this date was different since I asked him earlier in the day whether I should wear heels. He advised against it. Hmmmm. That usually means I’ll be dancing.

We were west of Chicago’s Loop and I started to get excited. The United Center is over here, are we going … Read more ...

It’s Been A Long Winter, But It Made For Fun Snow Days

The email came Monday night. School was canceled due to snow that had not yet begin to fall.  But the forecasters had been predicting Ice-Age proportions of snow, tossing around the once-funny, but now trite names like Snowpocalypse and Snowmageddon.

A little newsroom nostalgia thanks to my visit to Chicago’s WBEZ91.5

Last week I had my first real hard-to-reach itch to get back in a newsroom since I left The Associated Press. And it was all WBEZ’s fault.

Running Late: Another entry for my Mom of the Year nomination

We were running late. Again. Since having kids, I’m late to everything, I’m so late, I’ve begun to change the definition of late.

Sitting at a stop light, willing it to turn green I looked over at the SUV next to us and saw a huge, cinnamon-colored dog that looked like a … Read more ...

Party Like A Journalist: I Did.

There’s something interesting about friends, some are great, others not so great.

I love it when you haven’t seen someone in weeks, months or even years and then when you connect again it’s like no time has passed.

I recently had this experience en masse. A very good friend of mine left the AP after 22 years, eight months and three days of service (not that she was counting.) And naturally as any good journalist worthy of her stylebook would do, we went out drinking.… Read more ...
