Life’s messy. And mine got messier after having kids. We’ve all had our clichéd poop stories, the blowouts and the up-the-backs. There’s also the food fights, where little Johnny’s cheeks and the wall behind him contain more spaghetti than his tummy.

But my messiness is also me. I can’t list all of my mommy messes because there’s too many to count, but also because my swiss-cheese brain can’t remember them all. So here’s a few from my highlight reel.

Burning Dinner. I love, love, love to cook and before kids, never, ever burnt dinner. These days I pop something in the oven, the timer goes off and apparently that noise affects my short-term memory too. It’s like BEEEEP! And then poof! I forget that I had food in the oven. Charcoal anyone?

Niagara Falls. I washed my hands after changing a diaper and then I went to cook dinner.  About 15 minutes later, I hear the whoosh of a waterfall. Crap! I rush to the bathroom to see that I forgot to turn off the faucet. Who does that? Well, me apparently.  Water was spilling over the sink, across the counter and onto the floor. It was also flowing along the back of the wooden cabinets. My husband is going to kill me.  It looked like Niagara Falls. At least what I think Niagara Falls looks like, since I’ve never been. Part of me even wanted to join in on the fun and get in a wheel barrel. But I didn’t, I grabbed a bunch of towels instead.

Coffee, Coffee Everywhere. It had been a rough night with my infant. He was up every few hours for no apparent reason other than to drive me slowly insane. (And it worked!) The following morning I knew I needed extra coffee to fuel me to the end of the day. I began making coffee, I remember pouring in the grounds, but that’s about it. At some point I left the kitchen and when I came back, the coffee pot was sitting in a lake of coffee, so was the breadbox, the canisters of flour and sugar, and the knife box. I prefer to refer to this moment as the day I cleaned the countertops really, really good.

So yeah, I’ve had my fair share of messes and I know I’ve got even bigger ones to come. But like life, I just try not to take them so seriously.

  1. I tried to think about all of the messes I’ve cleaned up and it is like I’ve blocked them. I’m not sure what happened. I know I’ve cleaned up my fair share of puke and poop. I can’t say that I’m sorry those memories have disappeared.

  2. Oh so cool that you’ve blocked it out. I hope that my mind does that too! I’m pretty sure it will since it doesn’t seem like I can remember much of anything these days.
