Oh how I’ve dreaded writing this post. But I know I need to because it’ll help me accomplish my goal since talking about it will make me accountable. After all, my word is my bond.

It’s time I talk about my post-baby weight. Ethan was born two months ago, and while I’ve got no Hollywoodish disillusions that my body will make a Heidi Klum-like comeback (hell, I didn’t even look as good as her pre-baby!) I must drop the weight much faster this time than I did with my first kid.

After my first, it was bad in that I was still calling my jelly rolls “baby weight” when my “baby” was 2 years old. This time, things will be different.

With my first pregnancy, I gained about 30 pounds. With my second, I out-did myself. I thought it was a total 40-pound weight gain, but when I actually did the math, I discovered me and Kate Hudson had something in common for once. We both gained 60 pounds in our pregnancy. Wowzers.

In the month after Ethan was born, I dropped 30 pounds, but I’ve got 30 more to go. My plan? I want to do it the old fashioned way. Eating right and exercise. If I burnout on that, I’ll switchover to something like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig, but I’m really inspired to do it “on my own.”

Right now things are going good, I’m doing Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred and really like that. (I’m one of those weirdos who likes to exercise.) You’re supposed to workout every day for 30 days. I’m on Day 10 and have hit all my workouts. After the 30 days, Ethan will be old enough to where I can take him to our gym’s daycare so I can melt some more lard there. Plus I’m prepping for the Shamrock Shuffle race next month.

On the food front, I’m drinking an insane amount of water, eating small meals every few hours and try to have them be “clean” (i.e. not processed, more meals made from scratch) I *did* eat a glorious cheeseburger on Wednesday, but it’d been months since that happened. See? This is why I’m writing this, to keep me on my soon-to-be-skinnier toes.

  1. Good luck!
Although I love the Shred and think it’s very effective…I fizzled out early this time around…I don’t think I even did two straight weeks. My period came and bye bye motivation. I haven’t even considered starting back up again, although I have considered hot fudge sundaes and other forms of chocolate.

    • I know it’s hard to keep the motivation going. The Facebook group that I belong to is helpful. All day people are sending in updates of how they’ve accomplished their workout and you wanna be like one of the cool kids so it pushes you over that hump. 🙂

  2. I’m in the same boat! IT’S HARD! Good for you for making yourself accountable. I hope we both stay strong along this journey!

    • We will! Are you and DH still going to the gym at night? Want to hold each other accountable? We can develop a buddy system! We’ll put the F back in MILF… Or something like that.

  3. You’re on the right track girlfriend…we can’t wait to have you back with us on Sunday Mornings! There’s nothing like a good hour of strength training with Tania on a Sunday morning to get your body in shape, not to mention burn some calories!
    We miss you!

  4. You’ll do it Melanie! As you may know I put on a lot of weight with my first and it took a lot of hard work to get it off. With my second I was made sure I ate healthily and that I didn’t have a muffin in my handbag at all times like I did during my first pregnancy!
I found that with two children, the weight dropped off so much quicker, cause you’re never sat still!
I think you’re plan sounds great, but I can also strongly recommend a GI eating plan – if you want to try it I can recommend you a book.
    You’ll do well!!!
    Love from Toril

    • Thanks sweetie! You know I’m taking your brother down this skinny trail with me, he added a bit of sympathy weight. Sure, I love finding out more about any eating plans, so shoot me the name of the book. Love you tons. TONS.

  5. Ugh. Scarlett is 2.5 and I’m working on the last five. I have found every time I want to get a new haircut or buy new clothes, both my hair and old clothes seem just fine if I drop a few pounds. Cheaper to lose weight, but harder. HA!

  6. I am needing to start this as well, except my daughter is 10 lol. I was a caregiver for my mom and being single, a mom, and taking care of a terminal parent (and being a second mom to an Autism Spectrum Sis) doesn’t leave much time for anything much less exercise lol.

Good luck and thanks for dropping by my blog!

    • Thanks for the comment love! It is hard as moms because you get caught up so much in doing and going for others that it’s easy to lose sight of yourself. We have to keep ourselves a priority to help our kids, ya know?

  7. PS – It should be duly noted that you are more of a woman than I could ever be. I never even told myself how much weight I gained. Suffice it to say, those people that told me I looked “wonderful” pregnant, particularly in the last month, were LYING, and I will not be asking them how I look. Ever.

    • Bree. Even in high school I was more woman than you. And I mean that literally as you have always been so skinny. 🙂 I totally agree all those crazy people telling me that I looked good and “wasn’t very big.” Only my family was cool enough to tell me the truth, the rest of them fools had pregnancy goggles on. You know they’re kinda like those damn beer goggles, but no buzz.

  8. Mel –
Am so proud of you! You are half-way there! I remember how great you looked and felt after you met your goal after Logan’s birth. I know you can do it again! Much Love! Mom

  9. Thanks! You’re right I did feel great after I FINALLY dropped the weight from Logan and slipped back into my clothes. Then I went and got pregnant sooner than expected! LOL, but that’s fine. Temporarily losing my figure and gaining a great kid is beyond worth it!
