Hey hey! It’s My First Giveaway: Enter and you could win a prize and help a kid in need
I’m stoked to present to you, my fabulous readers, the very first giveaway at She’sWrite. I’ve thought about doing giveaways in the past, but was never spurred into action until now.
What I love about this giveaway isn’t just that you guys get a chance to get a freebie worth $160, but there’s some do-goodin’ involved. Let me explain.
We all know dental health is important, especially for kids. But most parents don’t know that children should visit the dentist within six months of getting their first tooth – and no later than the first birthday. (In Illinois most kids don’t visit the dentist until they are 3 ½ years old.)
As part of the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation’s campaign to raise awareness, you can easily give an oral health kit to a local underprivileged child. And these children really need it. After all, one quarter of U.S. children have 80% of the nation’s tooth decay, and most of them are underprivileged.
The statewide public service campaign is called “Dentist by 1” and serves to educate parents about the benefits of taking their children to the dentist by age 1 and to encourage them to schedule a visit.
Along with the campaign, the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation is offering one of my readers the Oral B 5000 an electric toothbrush ($160 value) to help promote good oral health! (Sorry, but it’s only open to my Illinois peeps.)
To enter, tell me about your child’s first trip to the dentist or something funny about their oral health care habits in the comments under this post. This Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation “Dentist by 1” Electric Toothbrush giveaway begins today and ends on 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

I know, need to take kiddos to the dentist (4 and 3) we still have not gone. Getting info about a great pediatric dentist is hard to come by. I know we don’t need a ped dentist, but I think it would be more comfortable for them and me.
My first child’s first dental appointment was around 1 year. I thought I was ahead of the game! Then, the pediatric dentist told me I should’ve taken him before he was even 6 months old! WHAT?! (I did better with my 2nd child…) I do think there needs to be more awareness, though. The pediatrician didn’t even think it was necessary to take the baby until he was 2. Anyway, both of my kids did fine on their first visits (minus a few tears). And, NO cavities! YAY! 😉
Danielle, I have you beat (I am honestly ashamed to say). I never heard anything from my ped so for some reason it just didn’t cross my mind until he was a toddler. An old toddler. Okay, he was 3. And he had a cavity.
But now I take him every 6 months and brush twice a day, etc. Okay, no etc. I don’t make him floss as much as he should. Ever.
My little guy’s first visit to the dentist was because of a chipped front tooth… It was pretty soon after getting his two front teeth. Luckily, it wasn’t anything serious. 🙂 We will probably go again this summer. We brush his teeth in the morning and at night. Some days he likes it better than others. 🙂
My kids first visited the dentist at 1 year. Z did great. T? Not so much! The dentist finally managed to pry her mouth open to look inside… But they got their pictures taken and posted on the wall in the dentist’s office for being cavity-free!
I took Cady to the dentist a while back and the hygienist started lecturing me on feeding her fruit snacks and bad foods, which I don’t let her have hardly ever. I keep trying to tell her that she doesn’t eat that stuff, but Cady kept saying, “yeah mom, you really shouldn’t let me eat that stuff.” I wanted to pop her (not literally of course).
THanks for the post and chance to win. My child likes to wiggle his head as he counts how long to brush for–may not be the best way to brush but it sure makes him enjoy the time!

My first time taking Michael to the dentist he had just turned 4. There was a picture of the Eiffel Tower on the wall being built, and he had just learned about Paris and the Eiffel tower at school. He immediately asked a million questions about it and the dentist was so impressed he knew about it at such a young age. (of course I didn’t tell her I had nothing to do with this knowledge!) He was also very curious about what his dentist drove for a car (my husband works for Honda) so they got into a long conversation about cars and she finally had to show him her car out the window.
My kids both get excited when it is time to brush teeth at night, but there is a constant battle over who gets to go first. Sometimes my oldest will try to sneak in the bathroom when he knows its bedtime before the younger one realizes whats going on. Even though I have to referee their fight, I’m glad they see it as something fun to do!!
